Understanding Service Provider Account Types

To participate in the EMA platform, service providers must create either a Business Account, a Personal Account, or in some cases, both. Each account type is tailored to ensure compliance with credentialing requirements, payment processing, and efficient service delivery. Review the guidelines below to determine what type of account you (or your organization) should create.

A Business Account is required for organizations or individuals operating as businesses that will receive payments through the EMA platform. This account is necessary if your operations involve billing for services provided to students.

Create a “Business Account” if you:

  • Own or operate a business that provides eligible services and will bill for those services directly.
  • Employ or contract with service providers whose services will be paid to your business.

Important:

  • All employees or contractors of a business who provide services requiring credentials must also create a Personal Account (see below).
  • Once individual Personal Accounts are created, the business is responsible for approving and connecting them to the Business Account through the EMA platform.
  • All payments for services will be made directly to the Business Account.

A Personal Account is necessary for individual providers who deliver services requiring credentials or licenses. However, Personal Accounts do not receive direct payments. Instead, payments are routed to the associated Business Account (either your own or the one you are linked to).

Create a “Personal Account” if you:

  • Hold a credential or license that qualifies you to provide services.
  • Are employed by or contract with a provider that has a Business Account in the EMA platform.

Important:

  • Individual Personal Accounts must provide required documentation for approval based on the service type (refer to the Required Documentation Checklist for details).
  • Ensure that your Personal Account is properly linked to the appropriate Business Account for payment processing and compliance.

Create both a Business Account and a Personal Account if you:

  • Meet the eligibility criteria for a Business Account (e.g., you own/operate a business that will receive payments), and
  • Hold a credential or license that qualifies you to personally provide services directly to students.

In this case, you will manage the administrative requirements of the Business Account while also maintaining a Personal Account that validates your qualifications as an individual service provider. Both accounts must be properly linked to ensure smooth operation within the EMA platform.

By maintaining clearly defined account types, EMA ensures accurate payment processing, compliance, and support for all participating providers. Ready to get started? Use the resources below to guide your account creation process!
